research & teaching interests

My writing explores public and personal narratives of American places and the consequences of these narratives in shaping identity, in particular, ethnic and racial identity. I am the author of Haunted by Waters: A Journey through Race and Place in the American West (U. Iowa Press, 2007). In my current book project,Yinz Got Game? Since coming to Amherst in 2008, I have taught courses in Asian American studies, ethnic literature, research methods, sports history, and public history.

I am affiliated with the Five College Asian Pacific American Studies Program and the Amherst Environmental Studies Department.

I spend my life away from Amherst fly-fishing (not often enough), biking, gardening, and trying to keep up with my winsome daughters.
